The British have a bad relationship with foreign languages. "Why learn them when the whole world is already learning English?," they say. Still, loads of kids learn French at primary school. It's the basic go-to language and leftover from when French was the language of ability in the UK, and not to the geographic proximity of the country. But we are way behind other European countries as teenagers and adults. Many European countries have students graduating from secondary school with two foreign languages at conversational level, when the UK.. both very few with even one. I can't say much more. I learned French, German, Latin, and Spanish at school, and I hardly speak a word of it any more.
