What a lovely tradition- telling stories in a marketplace. The only UK equivalent I could think of is another dying tradition, though very familiar one to Brits. It used to be that you could go to any beach or seaside town, and watch the "Punch and Judy show." It's always shown from a small tent with a small opening for some puppets. There isn't really a fixed story, but the characters are always similar. Mr. Punch mishandles Judy's baby, and when the policeman comes, Punch lives up to his name and beats the polman up with a club he always carries. He goes on to meet a variety of characters and he beats them, too. It's rather violent, but it used to be very popular.
